Sports and Cricket Physiotherapy - Christchurch

Whether you play at club level or compete at the top of your sport, a well-managed recovery is what gets you back faster and stronger - and lowers the risk of it happening again. That is exactly what we do at Embrace Physiotherapy.

We work with athletes across a wide range of sports including cricket, rugby, football, netball, running, and gym training. We understand the physical demands sport places on the body and what it takes to return to full performance, not just basic function.

When you come to us with a sports injury, we start with a thorough assessment to understand what has happened, what structure is involved, and what your goal is. From there, we build a phased rehabilitation programme that progresses from pain management and early movement through to strength, power, agility, and full return to training and competition. We work alongside your coach, trainer, or team where possible to make sure your return to sport is safe and timed right for you.

Cricket is one of our core specialties and a genuine passion. Cricket places unique demands on the body - from the explosive mechanics of fast bowling to the repetitive overhead action of throwing, and the sustained physical load across a long season. These injuries need a physiotherapist who truly understands the sport, and we do.

We have worked with cricketers from junior club level through to representative programmes, and we look beyond the injury itself to assess your bowling action, throwing mechanics, and training loads as part of your rehabilitation.

Common sports and cricket injuries we treat include:

  • Ankle sprains and ligament injuries

  • ACL, PCL, and other knee injuries

  • Hamstring, calf, and quadriceps strains

  • Shoulder injuries from throwing, bowling, and overhead sport

  • Fast bowling-related lower back stress fractures and disc injuries

  • Side strains and rib stress injuries

  • Stress fractures and bone stress reactions

  • Tendinopathies including Achilles, patellar, and gluteal

  • Finger and hand injuries from batting and wicketkeeping

We also offer sports injury screening and injury prevention programmes, which are particularly useful heading into a new season or returning from a break.

Many sports injuries are covered by ACC, so your treatment costs may be significantly subsidised. We will help you work through this at your first appointment.
